The multi-port valve on a sand or DE filter is one of those components that most homeowners use for years on the Filter setting without ever touching the others โ until something goes wrong. For service techs, mastery of every valve position and the ability to diagnose spider gasket failure quickly is essential. This is the complete guide.
Normal operation. Water flows from the pump into the valve, through the filter media top-to-bottom, and returns to the pool. This is where the handle sits 99% of the time during normal pool operation. All good water clarity depends on this position working correctly.
Reverses water flow through the filter โ water enters from the bottom, pushes debris off the media and up, and exits through the waste/backwash port. Used to clean sand and DE filters when pressure rises 8โ10 PSI above baseline. Not a position for cartridge filters (they have no backwash valve).
Short forward flush after backwashing. Water flows Filter-direction but exits out the waste port rather than returning to the pool. Flushes any debris loosened by backwash out of the valve and resettles the filter media. Run 30โ60 seconds every time after backwashing. Skipping this step results in a cloud of fine sand or DE returning to the pool when you switch to Filter.
Bypasses the filter entirely โ water goes directly from the pump to the waste line without passing through any media. Use cases:
Bypasses the filter โ water flows through the valve but returns directly to the pool without filtration or waste. Use when you need pool water circulation but don't want to filter (e.g., when the filter media is being replaced and the tank is empty, or when circulating liquid chlorine quickly before testing).
Shuts off all water flow through the valve. The pump must be off when using this position. Use to isolate the filter for service, media replacement, or repairs when you cannot shut off flow using other valves.
Never change the multi-port valve position while the pump is running. The water hammer and pressure spike can crack the valve body, blow the spider gasket, or damage connected plumbing. Always shut off the pump, wait for flow to stop, then change position.
| Position | Flow Direction | Waste Line | Pool Return |
|---|---|---|---|
| Filter | Top of media โ bottom | Closed | Open |
| Backwash | Bottom of media โ top | Open | Closed |
| Rinse | Top of media โ bottom | Open | Closed |
| Waste | Bypasses media | Open | Closed |
| Recirculate | Bypasses media | Closed | Open |
| Closed | No flow | Closed | Closed |
Inside the valve, a rubber gasket called the spider gasket (or spider) sits in a star-pattern groove on the bottom of the rotor. This gasket seals each valve chamber from the others โ preventing water from crossing between positions. When the gasket wears or tears, water leaks between chambers.
Spider gasket replacement cost: $10โ20 in parts. Models commonly serviced: Hayward SP0714T, Pentair 261055, generic 2" and 1.5" multi-port valves. Always verify the exact gasket part number from the valve's model label before ordering.
Log multi-port valve model and any spider gasket replacement dates in PoolLens. A valve that needed a gasket this season is likely due for another within 2โ3 years โ or the underlying cause (chemical damage, UV degradation) needs to be addressed.
PoolLens stores valve model, service notes, and inspection dates โ so every tech on your route arrives at each account knowing exactly what's been done and what's next.
Open PoolLens Free โRecirculate bypasses the filter entirely and returns water directly to the pool without filtration. Use it when you need to circulate chemicals quickly without the filter removing them, or when the filter is being serviced.
Water flowing out the waste/backwash port when set to Filter almost always indicates a failed spider gasket. The internal gasket has worn through, allowing water to leak between valve positions.
Remove the valve top, lift out the rotor assembly, pull off the old spider gasket from the groove, seat the new gasket, lubricate lightly with Teflon-based lubricant, and reassemble. The gasket costs $10โ20.
Closed shuts off flow to the filter, but the pump should not run with the valve in Closed position for more than a few seconds. A pump running against a closed system builds pressure rapidly and can damage equipment.
